Chapter Fifteen

Deep Indigo

My high heels come off the instant I’m back in my Rubi.

Still in my parking spot, I dial the number I got from Davenport. A young-sounding man answers after two rings with, “Deep Indigo, this is Mason, how may I direct your call?”

“Hello, Mason. My name is Alexis Silver. I’m trying to get in touch with Phoebe Kennedy.”

“Is this in reference to a particular account?” asks Mason.

I glance at my notes. “S0018?”

“All right. Please hold on for a moment.”

Bizarre music fills the phone, somewhat like steel drums but softer as if played by hand. Oy. I haven’t indulged in enough weed to listen to this sort of thing. Though it does beat the cheesy hold soundtracks most places around here use.

“Hello, this is Phoebe,” says a woman. Her voice is somewhere between commanding and older.

“Hi. My name is Alex Silver. I believe you were working with Mr. Ethan Ainsley on some kind of project.”

“Are you an employee of his?” asks Phoebe.

“Well, I suppose in a roundabout sort of way, I am. He’s gone missing. I’m a private investigator his family hired to locate him. It’s been a bit of a challenge. The man’s fallen off the planet without a trace, and whatever you may know about the situation is pretty much my only chance to find him before something dreadful happens.”

“Hmm.” The sharp click, click, click of a fingernail tapping the phone fills about ten seconds. “All right, but I would much rather we meet in person. You do have some credentials?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Does two this afternoon work for you?”

I glance at the clock on the dashboard. It’s currently a little after one. “Traffic willing. I’m in Seattle at the moment.”

“I’ll put you down for two then. It shouldn’t take terribly long. I hope Ethan’s all right. You think he’s in trouble?”

“I do. His sister has been worried about some people lurking around. Some information I’ve uncovered also suggests a probable threat to his wellbeing.”

“Ethan made a comment to that effect to me as well a few weeks ago, but I haven’t heard from him since about three weeks back. Anyway, I’ll let you get to driving. See you at two.”

“All right. Thank you.”

I hang up and toss my phone into the cup holder. That doesn’t leave me any time to change, so this formal outfit will have to do. Never hurts to over-dress for a meeting, right?

A few minutes into the ride, I notice a black Cadillac sedan following me. The warning feeling I get whenever I’m in danger doesn’t happen, so perhaps it’s merely a case of two cars happening to go in the same direction. Or, more likely, it’s someone from InEx keeping tabs on me in case I may lead them to Ethan, and they have no intention of harming me.

The ride is irritating by virtue of traffic, but I arrive in the harbor district of New Tacoma by 2:04 p.m. Deep Indigo occupies a warehouse-style building with access to the Hylebos Waterway. It’s even got what appears to be a dry dock.
